Introduction to working with PostGIS I & II

Have you ever run into waiting for your GIS tool to run on a large geospatial data set? If you have, or if you are just interested in learning about working with spatial databases, this is your workshop!

At the end of this workshop you will be able to

  • understand the conceptual basics of using PostGreSQL with PostGIS
  • create a geospatial database with an spatial index
  • connect to and displaying PostGreSQL/PostGIS data in QGIS
  • use basic geospatial functions (reprojecting, statistics, intersection, union, buffers, joins)
  • import/export data to and from the database

Pre-requisites: A basic understanding of GIS concepts. Further, if you want to use your own laptop, please have PostGreSQL 14 or higher and QGIS in the latest version pre-installed on your system.

This workshop will be held in person in Burnside Hall BH511 on 2 days and takes about 3 x 2.5 hours. The instructor will be Tim Elrick.
