Introduction to Working with GeoPandas in Python

Geopandas are an open source project to make working with geospatial data in Python easier. GeoPandas extends the data types used by pandas to allow spatial operations on geometric types.

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • understand the basics of working with pandas and shapely in Python
  • understand different geospatial data types to use in Python
  • how to use geoseries and geodataframes
  • reading, writing, and plotting vector data
  • buffers, intersections, and joins

Prerequisite: beginner’s level understanding of Python programming. Should be able to use Jupyter Notebook. Comprehension of basic data types, variables, and operators.

This workshop will take place in classroom BH511 and will take about 2.5 hours. Registration for this workshop will be open until noon on the day of the workshop. The instructor will be Violet Massie-Vereker.
