Introduction to Using ArcPy

March 9 @ 17:30 - 20:30

Free

Do you want to become a GIS analyst?
Are you tired of clicking or dragging files into the ArcGIS tool windows over and over?
Is your GIS analysis taking too long?
Are you pulling your hair with ModelBuilder?
If you replied yes to any of these questions, the “Introduction to using Arcpy” workshop is for you. Arcpy allows you to implement your GIS workflow through the Python programming language. It enables you to automate, scale up, complexify, and speed up your analysis.

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Argue why conducting your GIS analysis in Python is the way to go 😊.
  • Set up your GIS analysis in a Python programming environment.
  • Implement ArcGIS tools in Python.
  • Use environment settings to guarantee a robust analysis.
  • Build your own functions to implement a custom analysis workflow.
  • Make your analysis (more) reproduceable.

Prerequisite: familiarity with ArcGIS

Requirement: before you come to the workshop, please have either ArcMap installed on your Windows computer (you can get your complimentary license as a McGill student, faculty or staff member by contacting us at gicsupport@mcgill.ca) or make yourself accustomed with logging into one of our public computers in the GIC (see on our homepage how to do so).

This workshop will be hosted online on Zoom and takes about 2.5-3 hours.  Registration closes at noon on the day of the workshop. You will subsequently receive the Zoom link before the workshop starts. The instructor will be Mathis Messager.
