Introduction to working with LiDAR data

April 13, 2023 @ 13:00 - 16:00

Free

Interested in LiDAR and 3D point clouds but don’t know where to start? In this workshop, you will learn the basics about how these data sets are created. Using CloudCompare, learn how to find and filter out noise, classify points, segment a point cloud and create various raster-based digital elevation models (DEMs).  Whether you want to just make a pretty map or wish to exploit the full analytical power of GIS, this workshop is for you!

By the end of the workshop, you will be able to

  • manipulate, filter and classify point clouds in 3D space,
  • create a digital terrain model (DTM)
  • create a digital surface (canopy) model (DSM)
  • create a normalized DEM.
  • using QGIS, you will know how to extract contour lines, hillshade and slope models from the DEMs.

Prerequisite: none, but familiarity with GIS is helpful

Requirement: before you come to the workshop, please have CloudCompare in its latest version installed. It is available for Windows, Mac and Linux at https://www.danielgm.net/cc/. Additionally, you can, but don’t have to install QGIS (https://www.qgis.org).

This workshop will be hosted in BH511 and takes about 2.5-3 hours. The instructor will be Nicolas Cadieux.
