Dear McGill Community,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the new Geographic Information Centre (GIC). As of September 1st, 2012, the McGill Library has given full management of the Walter Hitschfeld Geographic Information Centre over to the Department of Geography. The mission of this new Centre is to actively support the teaching, learning and research activities at McGill University in the areas of Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing.
At the same time we will be working very closely with the Library in order to channel the previous services that were provided in the GIC, such as collection development, information literacy and the distribution of geospatial information in print and digital form.
I would like to invite faculty members to dynamically engage with the Centre by taking advantage of the resources available for your courses, and/or providing positive feedback on how to stimulate new and exciting opportunities for research partnerships.
I would like to invite graduate students from other Departments, Schools and Faculties to approach us with questions about their research related to GIS and RS, whether searching for data or learning specific techniques for data analysis. We may not have access to all the data or know the answer right away, but for sure we will point you in the right direction.
Our team includes a GIS technician, Ruilan Shi who will be supporting undergraduate students and courses, while Reseach Assistant, Ablajan Sulaiman will be assisting graduate students; their office is Burnside Hall 525.
Finally, since we are in a transition process I would kindly request your patience while we establish the Centre and move forward to be the “place to go” for all GIS and RS aspects at McGill University.
