Challenges and opportunities on the implementation of wireless sensor networks for environmental monitoring

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are emerging in both industry and academy as important tools to design and implement state-of-the-art environmental monitoring efforts. In this presentation I will discuss emerging challenges and opportunities associated to end-to-end implementations of WSN in outdoor conditions. I will specifically discussing the following aspects:
(i) Sensor needs and design, including chamber and outdoor testing;
(ii) Algorithms for sensor field deployment, aimed to design spatially optimized WSN networks
(iii) Cyber-infrastructure for data ingestion, processing, analysis and report of environmental information collected using WSNs.
The presentation will use examples from Australia, Costa Rica and Brazil using Enviro-Net®, an end-to-end initiative developed by the Centre for Earth Observation Sciences (CEOS) at the University of Alberta.
