Research Support Area

GICResearchSupportAreaThe GIC’s Research Support Area is a GIC facility that encompasses five workstations specifically built to carry out intensive GIS and Remote Sensing tasks. This area is intended for the use of graduate students and McGill faculty working with large GIS or/and RS datasets and specific software needs, therefore approval by the GIC’s Director is required beforehand. In order to apply for working in this area please fill in the GIC_AgreementForm.pdf and send an electronic copy to gicsupport@mcgill.ca. Please make sure get an access permission before booking a high speed computer in this area.

The computer specifications for Red, Green and Blue computers are:

Hardware:

  • Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit SP1
  • Intel Core i7 3930K @ 3.20GHz– HexCore processor with Liquid cooling
  • 64 GB DDR3 Corsair RAM
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 OC 4GB GDDR5 GPU – 1344 CUDA cores
  • 180GB Intel 520 Solid State Drive- as main OS and application drive
  • 120GB SanDisk Solid State Drive- as dedicated temp/scratch drive
  • Two 1TB Western Digital Black Hard Drives ( 7200RPM)- for workspace and data
  • Two calibrated 24” 1920 x 1200 Asus LED backlit IPS monitors
  • Steelseries Mechanical Keyboard
  • Steel Series Kinzu V2 Mouse (3200cpi)

For other GIS and RS tasks there are 40 computers in the GIC with enough computational resources to address course work and undergraduate projects. Also, it is possible to install software as per request by the student or Faculty for specific analyses as long as a license is provided to the GIC.
